Flying an airplane is relatively simple, keep it flying straight and level and you're fine. Landing an airplane is a bit more complicated and requires a few more hours of training. Another item that's going to take a lot of hours of work to master is navigation. GPS has simplified this to some degree, but it's still a fine art you'll want to know as a pilot. If you can't navigate properly, you may find yourself flying into an area you're not supposed to fly into.

Every student pilot is required to learn how to use one of the most basic tools of navigation, the VOR system. I've never been in an aircraft that didn't have a VOR and I've used them almost every time, even it was just for fun in conjunction with the GPS. VOR's utilize something called "radials" to tell you were you are. Radials are send out as radio signals from the VOR in every possible direction. Regardless of what direction you're flying in from, you can pick up on a VOR radial.

The VOR signals transmit at a very high frequency and are limited to line of sight. That means, if you have a mountain between you and the VOR station, you may not get a good signal. This will sometimes require you to climb to a higher altitude to intercept the transmission. If there's a none interference area, you'll usually see this listed in the Airport/Facility Directory.

There are actually three different types of VOR stations depending on your location and where you're flying. The first one is the Terminal VOR or TVOR and should only be used when you're within 25 nautical miles of the transmitting station and below 1000' above ground level (AGL). The low altitude VOR is designed to be used accurately within 40 nautical miles and between 1000' and 18,000' AGL. The last is the HVOR or high altitude VOR. It's accurate at various altitudes and, depending on topography, up to 130 nautical miles.

Now that you know how the signal is transmitted, how is it received in your aircraft? In order to use this information your plane is going to need an antenna, a receiver and the VOR indicator on your control panel. The same radio you use to talk to the air traffic controllers will pick up a signal from the VOR station. If you switch over to this signal, you'll hear a Morse code being transmitted which should match the identifier listed on your sectional. It's very important for you to verify the identity of the VOR station before you start using it for navigation.

You may be wondering why you need these systems when you have a fancy new GPS system on board. Well, it's always important to rely on more than one system when you're flying. If you have a GPS, back it up with the VOR. GPS systems are not flawless, nor are VOR's. Always have a back up plane. I would even suggest taking your GPS and turning it off once in a while to make sure you can navigate without it.

Capabilities. The Dell 1700n is capable of about 32 megabytes of storage, which is more than enough for most home business applications. If you need more memory, it's expandable to 160 megs. There are also interior slots for added DRAM, which is very inexpensive these days. It's also compatible with Windows 98 or higher computers through either its modern USB 2.0 ports or the last-generation parallel ports in the back. The UK telecoms giant BT is selling of capped calls as a part of its business strategy- but are 'capped calls' really offering good value to the customer? I made it my task to find out:

Call rates are unusually tricky to find on websites, BT's own website proved awkward to say the least with over 50 long lists to look through I wouldn't be surprised if many new customers give up the search - or maybe thats the intention? Calling telecoms companies proved a bit more fruitfull athough overwhelming with the variety of products that seemed to offer good rates on one hand and take away with long contract obligations with the other.

I also needed to establish the average length of a business call. Luckily for me Telecost performed this task a few years ago by analysing 2 million call records (2278614 to be precise) of 100 different companies in different parts of the UK. There was a wide range of company types in the study including high volume users such as: recruitment agencies, debt collection and media companies. It is of course difficult to know how representative the sample is however I don't expect BT will dish this information willingly. Results below:

Average length of call to mobile (07 numbers) - 110 seconds.

Average length of call to landline (01 numbers) - 112 seconds.

Average length of landline call (02 numbers) - 121 seconds.

Assuming that the average call length therefore is 2 minutes:

A 2 Minute call at BT standard rate to mobile would cost 45p and to landline would cost 15p (inc call setup fee).

A 2 Minute call with BT's 'Business Plan' to mobile would cost 25p (capped) and to landline would cost 8p on a 1 year contract.

A 2 Minute call with BT's Oneplan to mobile would cost 20p (capped) and to landline would cost 5p (capped) on a 2 year contract with 2 additional BT services required.

A 2 minute call using Westlake LCR to mobile is 18p and to landline 2.5p on a one year contract.

A 2 minute mobile call using Midland LCR to mobile is 16p and a 2 minute landline call is 1.8p on a 1 year contract with a minimum call spend requirement.

A 2 minute call using Gradwell VOIP to mobile would cost 20p and a 2 minute call to landline would be free(subject to acceptable usage otherwise would cost 2.5p) on a 3 month contract.

The conclusion, based on the information above being correct therefore is:- if you run an 'average' business then you are better off with LCR or VOIP. If your bunsiness makes longer than average phonecalls then you are better off staying with BT, although...

To benefit from maximum call savings customers should consider using voip phone systems such as Asterisk which will can be programmed to take the most efficient route. For example: - you can route all national calls through VOIP hence take advantage of free calls and unlimited outbound trunks and make savings on your line rentals, you can route mobile calls through GSM - hence achieve free calls to staff mobiles & mobile tarifs of 1.45p 4.5p - use BT Oneplan to route long calls.
